Abstract Recently, more and more marriages are held only in Islam, especially when the gifts and ceremonies stipulated by customary law are too burdensome for the people concerned. The terms that are symbols of customary rules have almost faded, and their place has been replaced by Islamic rules. Over time, the prohibition of clan marriages in Batak customs, in some communities there was a conflict between pro and contra groups. The pros are those who stick to customs. Meanwhile, the cons are those who adhere to Islamic teachings and the heterogeneous urban Batak community as is the case in the research that the researcher did.
